Private Sessions in Falmouth

I offer 1 to 1 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu coaching in Falmouth; tailored sessions for any rank, designed around what you want to get better at.

Matthew Remfrey Dodkins BJJ black belt

About Me

I'm Matthew, a BJJ black belt and one of the coaches at Pure Grappling. I started training in 2008 and got my black belt in 2025. I have around 13 years continuous training experience and have been teaching since 2019.

You can check my profile and grading history on BeltChecker:
www.beltchecker.com/profile.php?id=9349.

I run the regular adult classes in Falmouth and the kids' classes in Helston. I'm also a hippy and a programmer/nerd.

What a Session Looks Like

Whether you're a complete beginner curious about Jiu Jitsu, a hobbyist trying to plug a gap, or a competitor sharpening up before an event, I can help you.

What I can do:

• Roll & assess – I find the holes in your game, and we spend the rest of the session plugging them.
• Position deep-dive – pick a position you struggle with (side control bottom, half guard, knee shield, back retention) and we work it from every angle.
• Competition prep – sharpening tactics, pacing, gameplans for specific opponents or rulesets, working with reviewed comp footage etc.
• Concepts – I am experienced at teaching concepts, such as pressure, timing, leverage, and how to use them to solve problems on the mat.
• Beginner intro – a friendly first look at BJJ before stepping into a group class.

How I Coach: Constraints Led Approach

I'm a heavy proponent of the Constraints Led Approach (CLA), as opposed to drilling techniques in isolation and hoping they show up under pressure.

You learn faster, retain more, and the skills hold up when someone is actually trying to stop you.

Alongside Kev (of course), my approach to teaching is highly influenced by Matt Thornton of SBG and Priit Mihkelson, both of whom I have also been coached by and found inspiring.

Who It's For

Matthew Remfrey Dodkins

Private sessions suit anyone who wants focused, individual attention that you can't always get in a group class.

Some examples of who might find privates useful are people who might be...

• Curious about BJJ but uncomfortable jumping into a group class
• Returning from a long lay-off
• Weak in areas with a comp coming up
• Shy really wanting to learn but not keen on classes of ~20 or so people

Cost

£50 for a full hour of solid training, in a 1.5 hour slot. The extra half hour gives us time to set up and talk through what you want to work on.
